Man Utd are set to record their lowest-ever Premier League finish this season.

Former Manchester United winger Gordon Strachan believes the club could learn a lot from Bayern Munich as they look to return to the top of European football. United are set to record their lowest-ever Premier League finish this season and will not play in Europe next season unless they win the Europa League.

Ruben Amorim's side are currently tied 1-1 on aggregate with Real Sociedad ahead of the second leg of their Europa League last 16 tie on Thursday night. They have already been knocked out of both the FA Cup and League Cup and sit 14th in the Premier League.

It is set to be another bumper summer of change at Old Trafford as Amorim looks to mould the playing squad into his vision. The priority is to sign a proven goal scorer, though their transfer business could well be dictated by just how many players they manage to sell in the first place.

Gordon Strachan admires Ruben Amorim for trying to implement his own distinctive style at the club, but is well aware from his own managerial career that immediate results are crucial in order to raise belief in those ideas.

Another key issue is having a playing squad that can adapt to several different tactical demands depending on who their opponents are. United will look to sign more versatile players this summer, and Strachan believes they could learn a thing or two from Bayern Munich in that regard.

"Amorim really needs to get results, then he can get onto the next level on how he really wants to play," Strachan told Manchester World on behalf of makthavare.se. "Whatever your philosophy, fans want to see shots, headers, goals, attacking football. They want to win. Now when you're passing from the back and doing well, wonderful. But if it's not working, then you must try something else."

"And again, I keep going back to Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich, they can play any game you want. It's longer passes, shorter passes, pressing. It's an all-round package. I don't think Man United have a group of players that can play modern day football, the whole package. They’ve just not got it."

Manchester United summer plan is already in place

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Real Sociedad second leg in the Europa League, Ruben Amorim was asked about Manchester United's summer transfer plans.

"We have a clear plan to address next season," Amorim told reporters. "Of course, we have Europa League also, and you can reach Champions League. We never know. It’s far from this moment, but you never know. You can’t change the preparation for next season. So we have a plan. We know what to do. We know that we are in a difficult moment, but the most important thing, again, is to have a plan and to know what to do and what kind of players you need to bring."

Asked if those plans relied on selling key players this summer, he added: "We’ll see. We’ll see. In this moment, we just focus especially in this competition [the Europa League]. That can change everything. So let’s focus on the game tomorrow."
