Erik ten Hag has been desperate to overhaul his midfield in the summer transfer window and will finally get his wish at the expense of one of his favourite squad players.

United insist a deal to sign a midfielder would not depend entirely on selling players first, but a move for Ugarte, who PSG value at €60 million was always likely to require a significant outgoing to help finance.

It appears to be imminent, after Napoli reached an agreement with United to sign McTominay before deadline day. It is understood a fee in the region of €30million (£25.4m) has been proposed for the academy graduate as well as a future sell-on clause.

The Scotland international could be just one of a number of player departures in the final week of the window, with United also looking to sell Jadon Sancho, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal Mejbri. Christian Eriksen was initially allowed to leave if an appropriate offer came in, though United might change their mind given how light on options they are in midfield.

Juventus and Chelsea have both been linked with a move for Sancho and it is understood United would sanction an initial loan departure with the obligation to make the move permanent in a year's time. The English forward has been left out of the United squad for their opening two matches of the Premier League season.
