Erik ten Hag stuck with the exact same starting line up as the side which defeated Fulham on the opening night, with the same players listed on the bench for the match as well.

It means summer signing Joshua Zirkzee is a substitute once again despite his winning goal last week, while Harry Maguire has been selected ahead of fellow signing Matthijs de Ligt. It also means Jadon Sancho is missing from the 20-man squad for the second match running, but he has travelled to the Amex Stadium as a reserve option.

Speaking ahead of the match, Ten Hag explained his team selection and why he had decided to go unchanged from the Fulham win.

“We won last week, but subs are very important. You have starters, and you have finishers,” he told TNT Sports. “It's very important that we are hard to beat. When our squad is complete, we can beat anyone. But we have to do it more consistently.”

Quizzed on why Sancho was missing from the squad, he added: “He is here but I had a choice to make. He had some issues, we need a full squad and he is one of them. He has to compete for his position. We need in the squad every position double because it’s going to be a long season.”

United XI: Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Casemiro, Mainoo, Mount, Amad; Rashford, Fernandes.

Subs: Bayındır, De Ligt, Evans, Collyer, Eriksen, McTominay, Antony, Garnacho, Zirkzee.
