Sergio Reguilon has revealed he spoke to Manchester United legend David de Gea before joining the club on deadline day.

The defender arrived on loan from Tottenham Hotspur last Friday and was an unused substitute in Sunday’s loss to Arsenal. But with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia currently out through injury, Reguilon is expected to play a significant role over the coming weeks and months, as the only fit left-back in the squad.

The 26-year-old will become the seventh Spanish player to represent the Red Devils and follows in the footsteps of greats such as Gerard Pique, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata. Speaking in his arrival interview with club media, Reguilon revealed United’s greatest-ever Spaniard got in touch with him last week.

“I spoke a lot with David [de Gea] and he told me about the club. He told me 'you are coming to the best club in England',” said the former Real Madrid and Sevilla star.

“All these players [like De Gea] are legends over in Spain, because I follow a lot of the Premier League. David will always be a legend here and he told me about the club, the people that are here, the training ground, the stadium, the fans... everything.”

Reguilon revealed he was welcomed to the club by Raphael Varane and Casemiro - his former team-mates at the Bernabeu - and added he knows several members of the squad already, including Andre Onana and Bruno Fernandes.

Asked about completing his switch to Old Trafford, Reguilon added: “It is a dream. I am so excited to be here and to play for Manchester [United]. I see the dressing room and the players, I played against them a lot of times and, for me, I want to play now; I want to start playing games.”

Reguilon could make his United debut after the international break when the Red Devils host Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on 16 September.
