Roy Keane believes Manchester United have no choice but to keep playing Rasmus Hojlund despite it not being best for the striker's development.

Hojlund netted just his second Premier League goal of the season in Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham. The Danish striker rifled home an excellent finish to open the scoring after the ball fell to him in the box.

The 20-year-old enjoyed one of his better performances in the first-half but service after the break was limited as Tottenham dominated. And while Keane was happy to see Hojlund in the goals, he warned against heaping too much pressure on such young shoulders.

"Man United over the years has been about attacking players," Keane told Sky Sports. "They’re the players who grab headlines. You need one or two to step up and a couple did today - obviously they need more.

"[Hojlund] probably needs to be in the background learning his trade, coming on and playing the odd cup game and looking at world-class strikers. But he's come off the back of an injury, they've thrown him straight in, he's playing for a team lacking in confidence.

"They don't have a choice really because there's no one else. Martial always seems to be injured. It's not ideal but that's the scenario he's found himself in. He's gone into a team that's certainly not on the up and has not created that much for him.

"He's not getting loads and loads of chances, not getting a breather, there's that pressure and he's a young kid. On one hand you have to give him a chance but you can't wait for him, he has to take the opportunities he's getting."

Erik ten Hag is expected to bring in some support for Hojlund, although how likely a January arrival is remains to be seen. Martial is reportedly keen to stay at Old Trafford and play out the final six months of his contract and club chiefs have predicted a quiet month.

Any signings will likely come from the loan market for now with major investment set for summer, once Sir Jim Ratcliffe's investment in the club ifs fully ratified.
