Man Utd player ratings v Tottenham: Two score 8/10 but one handed 4/10 in 2-2 draw - gallery

Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford scored for Manchester United as they were held at home by Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United drew 2-2 against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in an entertaining Premier League encounter at Old Trafford.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe watching alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in the directors’ box, United needed an impressive display, especially with the side sitting in ninth before a ball was kicked. Instead, it was Spurs who carried the greater threat and had three times the number of shots on target, along with 64 percent possession.

But Goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford ensured United took a point, while Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur were on target for Tottenham.

It took just three minutes for United to grab the game’s opening goal as Rashford cut inside and drove into the box, before Destiny Udogie managed to get a tot to the ball. Hojlund has needed a lucky break this season, and on this occasion the ball fell perfectly into his path and, after two touches to shift it onto his left, the 20-year-old fired a powerful effort into the roof of the net.

Spurs ceaseless pressing from the front and their incredibly high line meant chances were never going to be in short supply, and Rashford went close after eight minutes when he placed the ball wide from a corner.

But it was Spurs who grew in stature as the half continued, with Jonny Evans and Diogo Dalot twice forced to head opposition shots wide, although both attempts appeared to be going off target. United didn’t heed that warning and Richarlison rose highest in the box soon after to plant a Tottenham corner beyond a statuesque Andre Onana.

United have struggled all season to control games from midfield and that was in evidence again with Spurs running proceedings, as the hosts found it difficult to maintain possession. Yet Tottenham’s best attempts in that period of the game were tentative efforts from Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson, none of which seriously tested Onana.

In contrast, United’s biggest threat came on the break, and they nearly grabbed an undeserved equaliser when Udogie headed the ball against his own post, before, against the run of play, Erik ten Hag’s side netted the next goal in this pulsating contest. This time it was Rashford, who interchanged quick passes with Hojlund in the box and then calmly slotting it beyond Guglielmo Vicario.

That proved to be a rare break in Spurs’ control, with Werner dragging a shot wide and Cristian Romero crashing a header off the bar in the final knockings before half-time. The brief, surely, for United at the break was to keep things tight at the start of the second period, yet within 50 seconds Bentancur ghosted into the box and fired the ball past Onana.

Richarlison and Werner also went close as Spurs continued to pull the strings, and Ten Hag responded with the introductions of Lisandro Martinez and Scott McTominay to add more bite into United’s approach. The latter did drag an effort just off in the 62nd minute following a United counter attack.

The substitutes had the desired effect and managed to stymie Tottenham's attacking threat, and after a entertaining first hour, the last 30 minutes were short on scoring opportunities. It took until injury for a real chance to be fashioned, with McTominay failing to hit the target from Alejandro Garnacho's cross, a moment that could have decided the game.

But the miss ensured the scores finished at 2-2. Here's how we rated United's players...
