Roy Keane wasn’t holding back when he gave another damning assessment of Manchester United on Thursday, following the 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League.

It was a performance, particularly in the first half, where the Red Devils were second best as Thomas Tuchel’s men repeatedly cut through the centre of the United midfield.

It took a Cristiano Ronaldo strike to earn a point for the hosts, but that didn’t diminish Keane’s ire after the game.

The Irishman was part of Sky Sports’ post-match coverage and doled out plenty of criticism in the studio.

Keane was scathing in his assessment of Marcus Rashford, felt Nemanja Matic was preoccupied about his imminent departure in a post-match interview, questioned Ralf Rangnick’s substitutes, and claimed the United board have not backed the interim manager.

Here are the best bits of what the ex-club captain had to say…

Rough on Rashford

“His performances… he’s not been consistent, he’s not worked hard enough, he’s not been brave in terms of taking people on, he’s not mixed his game up well enough in terms of running in behind.

“He’s now 24 years of age, he’s got to show more maturity, be more consistent, that’s the key to play at any big club. Every time I see Marcus getting warmed up, he’s always smiling. I don’t like players smiling too much. You smile when you do score, when you do something.

“Every time I see him in the warm-up he’s laughing or smiling. You’re going to war. You’re fighting for your future, start smiling when you score a goal, or you do something that affects the game, or gets people off their seats. Laughing all the time in a warm-up… come on.”

Matic’s nostalgic post-match interview

“Where’s the standards at the club? Matic’s talking about I’m leaving. ‘I’ve had a great time, Man United will always be in my heart, oh and Chelsea as well, oh and Benfica don’t forget them’. They all can’t be in your heart.

“We’re talking about Matic getting interviewed after the game that he’s leaving. There are three games to go - stop talking about that you’re leaving. You made a statement a couple of weeks ago - leave it at that.”

Why bring on Mata & Jones?

“[Juan] Mata’s come on for Man United again, he’s come on the last few games. You’ve got some young kids on the bench, get them on. It’s like a tribute to Mata. I thought it was his testimonial tonight.

“You’re Man United, you’re fighting for points. You’re playing for pride. It’s all like ‘we’ll give him a game, we’ll bring [Phil] Jones on.’ Everyone gets a round of applause.

“You’re trying to win a game of football. Forget all this ‘we’ll give someone 20 minutes because he’s leaving in a few weeks. Actually, you should have left two years ago. A few of them. Yet they’re all coming on getting their little 20 minutes.”

‘United have been rubbish all season’

“It [the interim job] has not worked out due to the results and the reaction of the players. He’s obviously not had the control and it’s been really difficult. All of the top coaches, you go into a club and you want some sort of backing and he’s not really had that because he’s temporary. Players see through that and that’s worked against him.

“This role reflects where Man United are. A lot of chaos, no-one’s making the right decisions. It reflects where the team are from board level right down to the pitch. It’s just not good enough for Man United.

“How many different ways can we say Man United have been rubbish all season? Every week we’re trying to come up with something different; personalities, performances, the manager’s fault, board level. They’re rubbish and they’ve been rubbish most of the season.”
