Manchester United drew 1-1 with Chelsea on Thursday night in their penultimate home Premier League match of the season.
In the first half, Chelsea dominated without finding a breakthrough goal. Reece James had an early shot that was punched clear by David De Gea and he then held a Timo Werner strike on goal.
N’Golo Kante also saw an effort held by De Gea, before the goalkeeper made two smart stops to deny shots from Kai Havertz.
Meanwhile, United’s best chance of the opening 45 minutes came from a Bruno Fernandes header that was comfortably held by Edouard Mendy.
But after the break Chelsea grabbed the first goal via Marcos Alonso, who drilled an effort into the back of the net when the ball fizzed across the box and bounced up invitingly after the Spaniard’s first touch.
But it didn’t stay level for long, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting his first league goal against Chelsea after a brilliant chipped Nemanja Matic pass into the box, which the Portugal forward controlled and rifled beyond Mendy.
The latter stages of the second half didn’t produce many goalscoring opportunities, with James’ left-footed shot that hit the outside of the post being the best opportunity in the final 30 minutes.
Here’s how we rated the players at Old Trafford…
1. David de Gea- 7
United’s best player on the night, and the goalkeeper was forced into several saves in the first half, while he couldn’t have hoped to save any of Chelsea’s goals.
2. Diogo Dalot- 5
Didn’t offer much going forward and found it difficult up against Alonso on the Chelsea left.
3. Victor Lindelof- 4
Had a poor first half and Havertz and Werner found it easy to run off the United centre-back.
4. Raphael Varane- 5
One of several Red Devils who got better as the game progressed. The former Real Madrid man made a few dodgy decisions in the first half, but dealt well with Romelu Lukaku when he came on in the second half.
