Ronaldo wins Player of the Month - how many times has he won it & who has claimed the award more?

Cristiano Ronaldo just can’t help but hoover up awards and accolades. The Portugal captain has been back in the Premier League for just a few weeks and has already claimed September 2021’s Player of the Month award.

The Manchester United forward beat off competition from Mohamed Salah, Joao Cancelo, Antonio Rudiger, Allan Saint-Maximin and Ismaila Sarr for the prize, which he last won 13 years ago.

Ronaldo scored three goals in as many games last month, including a brace against Newcastle United in his second debut, and he netted the equaliser as the Red Devils came from behind to beat West Ham United a week later. However, his fortunes were less favourable in the final match of the month as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa.

Ronaldo’s impressive form also extends to the Champions League, where he’s scored in both September appearances, including that injury-time winner against Villarreal.

How many times has Ronaldo won the Player of the Month award?

That’s five times the former Real Madrid and Juventus star has received the award. The first came in November 2006 when aged 21, and Ronaldo subsequently won the prize again the following month.

He then collected it in January and March 2008 respectively, meaning there is a 13-year gap between his fourth and fifth awards.

Ronaldo is the first United player to pick up the trophy since Bruno Fernandes in December 2020, although Jesse Lingard did win the award in April when playing for West Ham.

Who has won POTM more times than Ronaldo?

Only three players have collected the Premier League prize on more occasions. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard won the monthly award six times in his distinguished career, the same number as Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane, who has received the accolade more than any other current player.

But it’s Manchester City great Sergio Aguero who tops the charts with seven wins to his name, the last of which came in January 2020.

Ronaldo is now tied fourth for the most wins with former United strikers Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, while Fernandes has collected the prize four times, as has Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.
