Erik ten Hag has given a mixed injury update on Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Red Devils head into the game on the back of two defeats in a row against Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United, which has opened up the top-four race once again. United are just one point ahead of Liverpool, who have won their last six in the league, but Jurgen Klopp’s side have played one more game.

But United were dealt a blow ahead of the Wolves encounter and may be forced to manage without Rashford this weekend, after Ten Hag confirmed that the England international has picked up a knock. “He has a problem, an injury on his leg, so he is a big question mark for tomorrow,” said the Dutchman. “[Rashford] is doubtful, more than doubtful. So [there is] a big question mark.”

Meanwhile, there was better news surrounding Varane, who is back after a month on the sidelines through injury. Whether he is fit to start immediately is unclear, and Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw could continue at centre-back despite his return.

Alejandro Garnacho also made his return last week in the defeat to West Ham but was an unused substitute at the London Stadium. “He has one more week training,” Erik said of the Argentinian youngster. “Yeah, so he is available and we have seen he can bring something extra in the team.”

Elsewhere, Tom Heaton, Lisandro Martinez, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek remain absentees for United through injury. As for Wolves, they’ll be without Boubacar Traore, Chiquinho and Sasa Kalajdzic this weekend.
