Man Utd player ratings gallery vs West Ham - Two score 3/10 but one 7/10 awarded in 1-0 loss

A David de Gea error cost Manchester United at the London Stadium, as their poor form continues.

Manchester United suffered a frustrating 1-0 loss to West Ham United on Sunday, in a huge blow to the Red Devils’ Champions League aspiratons.

Erik ten Hag’s side had some good moments in the first half but fell behind to a Said Berahma strike midway though the opening period. After the break, West Ham dominated proceedings and should have put the game out of sight with a plethora of shooting opportunities.

It was United who started the game on top, with Bruno Fernandes, Antony and Christian Eriksen all firing efforts just a few inches wide in the first 15 minutes. Soon after, Marcus Rashford cut inside and smashed a shot towards goal, but it just nicked off the post and went out.

When the first goal came it was the Hammers who grabbed it via Benrahma. The ex-Brentford man picked the ball up from deep and drove at the United goal, before unleashing a weak shot on target. It was a strike David de Gea really should have stopped, and despite getting a hand to the ball, it inexplicably managed to squirm into the back of the net.

It was a quiet end to the first half with only two more chances of note. Antony clipped the outside of the post when he shot from a central position, while Benrahma tested De Gea with a powerful effort in injury-time.

The second period began with a West Ham onslaught that saw Tomas Soucek force De Gea into a save and then hit the side netting, while Lucas Paqueta twice saw shots fly just wide from dangerous areas. On 73 minutes, West Ham thought they’d got a second when Soucek’s header flashed into the net, but it was correctly ruled out for offside.

United did manage a few attempts, and Wout Weghorst and Rashford had shots on target which were saved by Lukasz Fabianski, before Casemiro’s header was saved in the latter stages. Anthony Martail went close with a strike at the start of injury-time, while Bruno Fernandes widely thrashed over with his left foot in the final chance of the game.
