Erik ten Hag has said Manchester United have signed a player with ‘huge potential’ as Rasmus Hojlund’s transfer was confirmed.

The striker, who joined in a deal worth up to £72m, was unveiled on the pitch ahead of United’s 3-1 victory against Lens on Saturday, just minutes after his transfer was officially announced.

United fans will have to wait a few weeks to see the 20-year-old make his debut however, as the Dane is currently suffering with a slight knock he suffered in pre-season training at Atalanta.

Despite that, Ten Hag is delighted to wrap up a third summer signing of the window and said United have recruited a ‘direct’ forward who is ‘determined’ to score goals.

"He is a real frontman,” the United boss told MUTV on Saturday, after the Lens friendly. “Very direct to the goal, very good presser, a physical presence. I think in the balance of this squad, we needed that, alongside [Marcus] Rashford, another player who is direct and can score a goal. That is all in his mind: he wants to score goals.

"I think he has huge potential. And now it's up to him first, to explore that and we will support him, all the coaches, the team, the team was waiting for a type like him. They will integrate him in the dressing room and in the pitch, they will help him.

"Finally, the player has to prove it. That is the character we need; we need hungry players and he is not a player who is so determined to score goals, winning games and winning trophies."

On the pitch, United came from a goal behind to beat Lens on Saturday in the penultimate match of pre-season. Andre Onana's first-half error saw the goalkeeper chipped from all of the 40 yards by Florian Sotoca, but goals from Rashford, Antony and Casemiro within 15 minutes of half-time ensured United turn things around.
