Pundit says Man United star's career is '100% over' at Old Trafford amid fears 'history will repeat itself'
This future of this Manchester United star has been cast into doubt.
Manchester United were placed in the firing line on Friday night as Roy Keane expressed his frustrations with his former side. But the seven-time Premier League winner wasn’t the only pundit raising issues with the current Red Devils team.
United squeezed their way into the fifth round of the FA Cup following a stoppage time goal from Harry Maguire. The shaky affair against Leicester City looked to be headed for extra time but the centre-back nodded home a controversial winning header.
Despite appearing to be offside, Maguire’s goal stood with no VAR to overrule the decision, and the Red Devils kept their title defence alive with another narrow scrape of a win.
“United got out of jail. Don't be fooled by it. You have to praise them - Manchester United are in the next round of the cup - but if they keep performing like that... the performance itself was nowhere near good enough,” Keane said on ITV.
“From United's point of view, is this what it's come to? Nowhere near good enough. United aren't even doing the basics right.”
While Keane unleashed a general rant aimed towards the whole team, Thomas Gravesen is more concerned about his compatriot Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen’s time at Man United ‘100 percent over’
Eriksen was named as a substitute against Leicester but failed to get any minutes on the pitch. The 32-year-old has made 21 appearances in all competitions so far this season but many of them have been cameo appearances from off the bench.
With regular time against him and his contract due to expire at the end of the season, Gravesen ‘fears’ this could be the beginning of the end of the road for Eriksen. United have opted not to renew the midfielder’s terms beyond this season, meaning he will be available as a free agent in the summer, but whether he moves on to another club remains to be seen.
“It's 100 percent over for Christian Eriksen at Manchester United this summer, and I also fear that his career is over,” Gravesen told Tipsbladet. “Where is he going to go? Where is he going to go and earn 60 million kroner a year? I have a hard time seeing that.
“He has probably earned the money he should, but I think that the development that Christian has been in the last few years is downward. It is sad to see the situation that Christian Eriksen is in. He is one of the players in Denmark who has given us the most. He has shone and been our best man, so it is sad if his career ends like this.
“He left Milan, and suddenly he was just gone. It took six months before he announced what happened. Christian Eriksen is turning 33 soon, and I'm afraid history will repeat itself.”
Ruben Amorim less than pleased with United result
Despite earning their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup, manager Ruben Amorim was not best pleased with the display from his team. Speaking to ITV after their win over Leicester, the Portuguese boss described the evening as a ‘good result, not a good performance’.
“I cannot focus just on saving the season or the momentum with a cup. It's not the way I see football, it's not the way I see Manchester United.
“I'm not thinking about the end of the season because the final is at the end of the season. I don't care about that, I care about the moment and the moment is not good enough. A good result. We move forward to the next stage. We have a week to prepare, but today was not a good day.”
