Speaking on Match of the Day, pundit Jermaine Jenas has said Manchester United showed their ‘togetherness’ in their away win at Southampton.

The Red Devils won 1-0 courtesy of Bruno Fernandes’ second-half strike.

After losing their opening two games of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford, Erik ten Hag’s side have now won back-to-back matches after beating Liverpool last Monday.

They defended well against the Saints to earn a valuable three points and will be hoping they have turned a corner now.

‘Steps in the right direction’...

United have been criticised heavily in the media over recent times but Jenas has been quick to praise them after their latest victory.

He said:

“The performance was just about building on that result (against Liverpool) and also taking steps in the right direction to find a way of playing and find some confidence in themselves after the start to the season they have had.

“What they did really well was when they did come under pressure at 1-0 up they plugged the gaps really well, they showed their togetherness as a group and there was some nice partnerships building and developing.”

He added:

“Southampton were very good and created a lot of chances. If they’d had more of a clinical edge they might have nicked it. United just made it difficult.

“I though all round they looked more together. They looked like a group of players who desperately wanted to win this game.”

What next?

United return to the action on Thursday evening against Leicester City away.

The Foxes have struggled so far this term and are under pressure to start picking up some results under Brendan Rodgers.

Ten Hag’s men then have top of the table Arsenal at home next weekend and the Gunners go into that one on the back of four wins on the spin.

The transfer window shuts at the end of this month and all clubs in the league still have the opportunity to sign players before the deadline.
