Manchester United’s 5-0 thrashing from bitter rivals Liverpool has mounted pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

No decision has been made on the Norwegian’s future as of yet by the United hierarchy but the end could be nigh after a torrid few weeks.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who works for Sky Sports Italy, says that they are expected to meet over the coming days and decide whether to stick with Ole.

Despite still being in the post, bookmakers are doing a brisk trade over who could succeed the 1999 treble winner should he face the boot. Here, we look at their frontrunners.

Zidane

Zinedine Zidane, who has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid, is the front runner with six bookmakers with his odds shortening to 5/2 at the time of writing.

The Frenchman is a natural born-winner, both as a player and as a manager, winning all there is to offer. During his two spells as manager of Madrid, he won three Champions Leagues, two FIFA Club World Cups, as well as two league titles.

Rogers

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is second favourite, though his odds have been drifting at 7/2.

The Northern Irishman managed United’s rivals Liverpool and almost took them to a Premier League title but given his former links, his appointment may not go down with the most ardent supporters.

But Rodgers is also keen to remain with Leicester City and seemingly rejected the advances of big money Newcastle United recently.

Conte

Antonio Conte is behind Brendan Rodgers, though it has been reported by the Daily Mail that he would entertain the idea of managing the Red Devils and has odds of 9/2.

Conte won the Serie A title with Inter Milan but later left his role at the San Siro over transfer differences.

The 52-year-old already has experience of managing in the Premier League having won the league title in 2017.

His winning credentials in the division is something United could consider given they haven’t won a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.

The Mail reports the Italian would want a full say over new signings and wants assurances over his role, which would perhaps put to bed the idea of a sporting director role at the club.

Ronaldo

Current first-team player Cristiano Ronaldo is a shock candidate with both Paddy Power and Betfair offering 16/1 odds, placing him as the fourth favourite to take charge.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner has shown no signs of pursuing a career in management and he does not possess the right coaching qualifications to manage the club.

Add that in mind to the plethora of coaches at Old Trafford right now such as Michael Carrick, then there are other better suited options for an interim period.

Others being mentioned

Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag’s odds have been improving with William Hill and he finishes off the top five with his highest odds being 10/1 with both PaddyPower and Betfair.

A name that won’t go away is Mauricio Pochettino, who has continuously been linked throughout Solskjaer’s tenure.

Pochettino, manager of Paris Saint-Germain is as far away as 16/1 with William Hill and is unlikely to leave the Parc de Princes, given the blistering start he has made this season.

It may be a case of the right man at the wrong time once more for the Argentine, given the persistent rumours between United and himself.
