Matthijs de Ligt has already given transfer verdict amid Man Utd links

The Dutch centre-back has been discussing his ongoing contract situation amid links to Old Trafford.

Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has revealed that he is in talks with the Serie A giants over a new contract - but has stressed that he is yet to decide where his future lies.

The Dutchman has been linked with a potential reunion with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Manchester United next season amid ongoing uncertainty regarding his future in Turin.

De Ligt’s contract in Italy is not set to expire until 2024, but after a second consecutive fourth-placed finish for Juve last term, it has been suggested that the 22-year-old could seek a fresh challenge elsewhere.

The centre-back was a key part of Ten Hag’s side in Amsterdam, and helped his boyhood club to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League back in 2019.

But while speculation mounts over his next move, the player himself has delivered an update on his situation at Juventus.

What has De Ligt said about his contract talks with Juventus?

Speaking to Dutch outlet NOS, De Ligt said: “There are ongoing conversations between me and Juventus.

“Right now I am focused on how I perform on the pitch, once the right moment arrives I will decide to extend or to look further.

“I always look at what is best for myself in terms of sporting project. Fourth place, two years in a row, is not good enough. We will have to make steps in that direction.”

De Ligt did, however, stress that he is relatively content at Juventus, and especially his individual contributions in recent months.

He added: “Personally, this was my best year so far. In terms of playing time and the way I played.

“The club have said that to me and I have shown this season, when Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci were injured, what I am capable of. I had to take the lead and it went well. I think that’s the next step.”
