Mathys Tel 'awaiting' Manchester United decision as £50million fee agreed for Aston Villa and Tottenham target

Man Utd could make a late swoop to sign Mathys Tel in the January transfer window.

Mathys Tel is reportedly waiting to see if Manchester United make a move for him before agreeing a deal to join Tottenham in the January transfer window.

United are eager to add a forward to their squad before deadline day and are keeping tabs on Bayern Munich youngster Tel as a potential transfer target. It is understood United would only be able to sanction a loan move, while Tottenham are prepared to buy him permanently this month.

Bayern reportedly wanted to keep the 19-year-old for the remainder of the campaign but L’Equipe claim they have now agreed a deal worth €60 million (£50.2m) to sell him to Tottenham. The problem is, the player has yet to agree to the move. United, Chelsea and Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the French teenager in the winter window. Another report from the Daily Mail claims that Tel is waiting to see if any of those clubs will make a move for him before committing to Tottenham.

Manchester United stance on Mathys Tel

United are keeping tabs on a possible move for Bayern forward Tel, but would prefer a loan deal for the teenage striker due to their tight financial situation. Ruben Amorim wants to sign an attacker in the closing days of the transfer window, though they would only be able to afford a loan fee or free transfer unless a player was sold.

United would still like to sell Marcus Rashford but with few teams able to match his hefty wage demands and pay a transfer fee, they could entertain offers for Alejandro Garnacho instead. Due to the current PSR rules, there is an incentive to sell an academy graduate this month because all of the transfer fee would represent pure profit from a financial perspective.

If Bayern decide to sell Tel permanently this month, it is highly unlikely United will match the asking price, particularly because they could sign a more experienced striker for such a fee.

What has been said about Mathys Tel

Earlier this week, Bayern sporting director, Max Eberl, revealed Tel had asked to leave the club as he is unhappy with his lack of playing time. "Mathys decided at the time [in December] that he wanted to stay, that he wanted to assert himself. Now Mathys comes along and says that he can imagine doing something," Eberl said. "And now we have to think about what we are going to do, whether we are going to do it."

Tel has failed to score a goal in 13 appearances for Bayern this season and has struggled for game time since Vincent Kompany took charge. The German giants agreed to pay Rennes a possible €28.5 million for the teenager back in 2022, as they won the race for the forward dubbed 'mini-Mbappe.'
