All the latest news surrounding Manchester United’s bid to land Chelsea star Mason Mount.

Erik ten Hag is keen to land a number of new signings this summer as he looks to build and refine a Champions League-ready squad. United took a step forward last season, but there is no doubt that expectations will rise for the coming season, and the Red Devils will be expected to get involved in the Premier League title race while also competing well in the Champions League.

New signings will be required to ensure that fate, and here we take a look at the latest concerning the club’s pursuit of Mount.

Latest bid

United are said to have a £55million bid on the table for Mount as things stand.

As reported by Sky Sports, the Red Devils upped their offer to £55million but saw Chelsea reject the offer, with the Blues reprortedly demanding as much as £70million despite the fact Mount only has a year on his current contract. The report claims United’s £55million offer still stands but Chelsea are said to have submitted a counter-proposal of £58million upfront and £7million in add-ons.

That would add a possible further £10million to United’s most recent offer.

Discussions set

The BBC have published a similar report, but they add that key discussions are set to take place between the two clubs this week.

Chelsea likely know they need to sell Mount assuming the midfielder does not sign a new deal, given they could lose him for free next summer. But their demands haven’t exactly reflected their weakened negotiating position up until now. They believe their England star is worth £65million to £70million even with the contract factor.

United believe there is some discount due, and especially given Mount has seen play time reduced amid a busy Chelsea squad. The two clubs are now set to hold discussions to see if those differences can be resolves.

Caicedo links

United are said to have identified Brighton star Moises Caicedo as a possible alternative to Mount.

Caicedo is likely to cost just as much - and likely more - but he could be available for the right price given his failed transfer request in January. Sky Sports report United could be preparing a formal approach to sign Caicedo, but it could yet be a play to make Chelsea nervous in negotiations over Mount.

Though, if the Mount deal falls through, it seems the Red Devils have a plan B as they look to land a midfielder before the start of the new season.
