Manchester United are being linked with another midfielder as their Mason Mount chase goes on.

Manchester United are said to be weighing up a move for a Mason Mount alternative.

The Red Devils are said to have a £55million offer on the table for Chelsea star Mason Mount, but they are not getting anywhere with that particular deal as things stand. Chelsea are said to want £70million or more to sell Mount, but United don’t value the England star as highly, particularl given the midfielder only has one year remaining on his current contract.

Amid reduced appearances, Mount may push for a move before the summer is out, but United may well have their own timeline in their bid to land a new midfielder.

According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils could turn to Brighton star Moises Caicedo as they look to fill their midfield void, expected to make a formal approach sooner rather than later. Caicedo has attracted plenty of attention over recent times, and interest from Arsenal in January saw him submit a transfer request.

Brighton stood firm on that occasion, and Caicedo knuckled down to help the Seagulls to land a Europa League spot, but Brighton may well be less successful in keeping the Ecuadorian around this summer. Though, having already sold Alexis Mac Allister, it’s likely the South Coast club will demand a very big fee for Caicedo.

Asked about the situation, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth said: “Manchester United have always had an interest in Moises Caicedo, but cynics will look at this in a different way and see them initially going for a Chelsea player, and because they can’t get the deal that they want, the noises that are emanating about other targets involve someone that Chelsea are also after.

“That could be, maybe, to try to accelerate a Mason Mount deal on their terms. Or, we take it on face value, Mount will be out of the equation, and they’ll go for Moises Caicedo.”

Caicedo is still only 21 years of age, and there has been talk he could cost as much as £80million or more this summer.
