Mason Mount has finally been confirmed as a Manchester United player.

The Red Devils were in conversations with Chelsea for weeks ahead of ultimately agreeing a £60million fee. The Blues were initially said to have wanted as much as £70million, but the two clubs wound up meeting in the middle with their valuations, which was no surprise given Mount only had one year remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

The England international now signs a five-year contract with United to link up with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford ahead of the new season.

Mount underwent his medical on Monday ahead of posting a farewell message to Chelsea fans on Tuesday. The 24-year-old came through the academy at Chelsea, and joining a direct rival was always going to ruffle some feathers, but the Blues have added a huge number of players over the last year, and Mount was set to see play time reduced in the coming season after battling injury in the campaign just gone.

At United, the England star will be expecting to play a starring role, joining an already competitive midfield, likely playing alongside Bruno Fernandes and just ahead of Casemiro in the anchor role.

Mount was unveiled as a United player on Wednesday morning, and he was pictured in the new home kit, which was released on Tuesday.

Upon his signing, the midfielder told the club website: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here.

“I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.”
