There’s no denying Manchester United have signed some awful players in the past, under managers from Sir Alex Ferguson to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Last summer, the club spent over £130m on Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, with no silverware to show for it.
However, there have been significantly worse investments from managers over the years, especially since the departure of Ferguson in 2013.
Whether it’s breaking the club’s transfer record and receiving little in return, or signing a player with so much promise who then fails to perform once at Old Trafford, there’s plenty of debate as to who United’s worst signings have been in recent years.
So we’ve taken a look at the seven worst signings made by the Red Devils in the past decade, including two current stars.
1. Alexis Sanchez
Arguably the worst signing United have made in the past decade, Sanchez’s move didn’t work out for player or club, with the Chilean only netted five goals in his 45 appearances at Old Trafford. Photo: Getty Images
2. Angel Di Maria
A then-record signing (£59.7m) in 2014, Di Maria’s Red Devils career only lasted one season after a shocking year in Manchester. The winger came to the club with so much excitement, but failed to make an impact, only scoring four times in 32 games.
3. Memphis Depay
An exciting prospect when signed from PSV Eindhoven, Depay was set to burst onto the scene at United but failed to make much of an impact. He scored just seven goals in 53 appearances before departing 18 months later for Lyon. Photo: Getty Images
4. Anthony Martial
Moving from France, the striker was immediately written off by the press. While Martial has had some good moments at the club, he’s been too inconsistent across the years. The Frenchman will return to Old Trafford in the summer following a loan to Sevilla. Photo: Getty Images
