Manchester United are on the hunt for revenge as they take on 2020/21 Europa League winners Villarreal at Old Trafford on Wednesday (8pm) in the UEFA Champions League.

The La Liga outfit denied Ole Gunnar Solskjær a first major trophy since managing United by defeating them 11-10 on penalties in Gdansk with Gerard Moreno opening the scoring before Edison Cavani’s equaliser.

It was mixed fortunes for both sides heading into this match. The Red Devils suffered a shock home loss to Aston Villa, who claimed their first win at the ground in 12 years. Kourtney Hause scored in the 88th minute before Bruno Fernandes blasted over a penalty in stoppage time.

Villarreal meanwhile, managed by Arsenal flop Unai Emery, secured a goalless draw with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Neither side won their opening group match two weeks ago but the Spanish side at least have a point on the board.

They drew 2-2 with Atalanta, having led 2-1 after Manu Trigueros and Arnaut Danjuma cancelled out Remo Frueler’s opener but with seven minutes left, Robin Gosens equalised.

United suffered a shock defeat to Young Boys, losing in late fashion. Cristiano Ronaldo had given the away side the lead but Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s first-half red card was the start of their downfall. Moumi Ngamaleu brought the Swiss side level before Theoson Siebatcheu scored a 95th minute winner.

What’s the latest team news?

Captain Harry Maguire had to be substituted in the second-half on Saturday after taking a heavy kick to his calf and will have to be assessed closer to kick-off.

Left-back Luke Shaw, who had a stellar EURO 2020, was taken off earlier in the match which could mean a reshuffled backline.

England forward Marcus Rashford is back in training but will not be rushed after undergoing surgery for a shoulder problem. He will be phased back into the first-team fold after the international break.

On a personal level, Cristiano Ronaldo will be hopeful of breaking his duck gainst The Yellow Submarine. Ronaldo has lined up four times against Villarrael but on all occasions he drew a flank in four consecutive sets of goalless draws.

What about the opposition?

Villarreal, like United, will be without a player due to suspension. Former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin was dismissed in the game against Atalanta and will not be returning to England for this one.

When it comes to injuries, former Tottenham Hotspur left-back Juan Foyth was taken off in the closing stages of Saturday’s match and could be a doubt.

Dani Raba and Samuel Chukwueze are back in training though they are unlikely to play but they will be assessed. Gerard Moreno, who struck against United back in May is on the sidelines and will not haunt them this time round at least.
