Erik ten Hag’s side have picked up three points from the opening two league games of the new season and slipped up last time out at Brighton, losing 2-1 at the Amex. The United boss named an unchanged side for that game, but might be forced into at least one change this weekend with Mason Mount a doubt.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder was replaced at half-time last week due to a knock and it’s not clear if he will be back for Arne Slot’s first visit to Old Trafford as Liverpool manager.

“It was forced,” Ten Hag said when asked about Mount’s withdrawal against Brighton. “He mentioned an issue, and I don't want to take the risk with him. I don't know how much of a worry it is, I can't say at this moment.”

It’s also not clear if Jadon Sancho will be available this weekend, not least because he is reportedly attracting transfer interest from Chelsea and Juventus. The winger has not been named in the last two Premier League matchday squads but did travel to Brighton .

Likewise, Victor Lindelof missed last week’s game with a minor injury and hasn’t featured this season. Ten Hag is expected to give an update on both players in Thursday’s press conference.

Elsewhere, Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund are out with injuries but it’s hoped they could be available after the international break, while there is no update on long-term absentee Tyrell Malacia. Leny Yoro is the only other injury for United, and the summer signing is not expected back until November at the earliest.

As for Liverpool, the Merseyside club only have one injury concern: Curtis Jones. The midfielder missed last week’s over Brentford with a knock but could be back for the short trip to Manchester.

“He picked up a little injury during the week and missed a couple of sessions, so will not be available to play,” Slot said last week on Jones’ situation.

Doubts: Lindelof, Mount, Sancho (United); Jones (Liverpool) Out: Yoro, Shaw, Malacia, Hojlund (United).
