Manchester United star apologises to fans after 'very difficult year'

Man Utd lost their final match of 2024 against Newcastle United on Monday night.

Amad Diallo has apologised to Manchester United supporters after 'a very difficult year' in which the club recorded its lowest-ever finish in the Premier League and sacked a manager.

The Ivorian was one of United's standout performers across the calendar year, though he spent a large amount of it on the periphery under previous boss Erik ten Hag. Amad was rejuvenated under the guidance of interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy and has continued his impressive form under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Amad gave United supporters one of their greatest moments of the year with his last-second winner over Liverpool in the FA Cup, a trophy they went on to win against all the odds against noisy neighbours Man City. The trophy lift proved to be a false dawn though, as Ten Hag was ultimately backed to stay at the club by the new Ineos regime, only to be sacked a couple of months into the new campaign.

United's woes have continued under new boss Amorim as United ended the calendar year with four consecutive defeats across all competitions and having lost five of their last six in the Premier League. To make matters even worse, the club have warned finances will be tight in the January transfer window, with no new permanent signings expected.

It should have been an individual year to savour for Amad, but he took to social media to apologise to supporters on New Year's Eve. "a very difficult year, apologizing is not enough...," he wrote. "but you have supported us and continued to do so throughout all this time... thank you…"
