Exclusive:Manchester United plans revealed for 'freakish' star who shone in Arsenal win

Man Utd held on to defeat Arsenal on penalties in the third round of the FA Cup.

Manchester United intend to keep Toby Collyer at the club for the remainder of the season after they had considered a potential loan exit for him this month.

The 21-year-old has been subject of loan interest in the January transfer window but is set to remain a part of Ruben Amorim's side after his impressive cameo appearance against Arsenal at the weekend.

Collyer played 39 minutes as a substitute at the Emirates on Sunday and made a key contribution to the match with his energy and athleticism as 10-man United held on to force a penalty shootout that they eventually won.

The young midfielder was identified for a first-team role by former manager Erik ten Hag last summer but suffered a setback when he was sidelined through injury that saw him miss over a month of action. It was unclear where the former Brighton youngster would fit in under Ruben Amorim, though it is understood he has made a positive on the new head coach and is set to be given further opportunities in the coming weeks.

Collyer's running stats have been described as 'freakish' by club sources and he is considered one of the best athletes in the United first-team squad. His role could grow in importance if Christian Eriksen or Casemiro leaves the club this month, with both veterans expected to depart at Old Trafford this calendar year.

Ten Hag made the point of attending Collyer's contract renewal ceremony when he signed a new contract with the club in July 2024. The Dutchman was impressed by the youngster's maturity and professionalism at such a young age and was delighted to see him sign a deal until 2027, with the option of an additional year.
