Man Utd & Man City transfers rated among worst Premier League signings of all time - as voted by fans

Manchester United and Manchester City have had another summer of splashing the cash, with Antony becoming the most expensive transfer deadline-day signing ever when he joined the Red Devils for £82m, while the defending Premier League champions welcomed Erling Haaland to England.

Both clubs have had their share of transfers that haven’t gone quite as planned and will be hoping their summer moves pay off - with the former Borussia Dortmund striker already looking to be worth every penny.

With more and more money being spent across Europe, head-to-head virtual trading platform SportsBroker has surveyed 1,000 fans to see who they believe is the ‘worst value for money Premier League signing of all time’.

Here was the top 10, according to the poll...

10. Davy Klaassen - Ajax to Everton (£25m)

Davy Klassen joined Everton with very high expectations in 2017 after spending 13 years with Ajax.

In the season prrior to his move to Merseyside, Klassen had bagged 14 goals and nine assists in the Eredivisie and looked to be a great addition to the Toffees’ side.

However, the midfielder only managed 16 appearances across all competitions during the 2017/18 season and failed to register a single goal or assist before he was shipped off to Werder Bremen for half the fee that Everton paid a year earlier.

9. Tanguy Ndombele - Lyon to Spurs (£54m)

Tanguy Ndombele had a lot of pressure on him when he joined Tottenham in a club-record deal, surpassing hte previous transfer record set by Davinson Sanchez.

While the midfielder had glimmers of hope during his time in North London and made 63 league appearances, but spent most of the time cast out of hte starting line-up due to poor and inconsistent form.

After a loan return to Lyon in January, he returned to England and has since been loaned out again to Napoli with an option to buy for €30m - a significant decrease on what they paid for the Frenchman.

8. Mario Balotelli - AC Milan to Liverpool (£18m)

There was a lot of uncertainty around Mario Balotelli’s return to the Premier League due to past behavioural issues, as well as questions being raised as to whether he could fill the boots of Luis Suarez.

The Italian forward had impressed for AC Milan with 14 goals and seven assists in 30 league appearances the previous season, however he was unable to replicate his form upon his return to England.

Balotelli scored only four goals during his spell on Merseyside, while also coming under criticism from Brendan Rodgers and was also suspended and fined for posting an image on social media which appeared to contain anti-Semitic and racist references.

Balotelli returned to AC Milan on loan the following season before joining Nice on a free transfer in 2016.

7. Angel Di Maria - Real Madrid to Man United (£60m)

After a hugely successful four year stint with Real Madrid, Angel Di Maria sent fans into a frenzy when he joined Manchester United in the most expensive transfer made by a British club at the time.

However, it looked doomed from the start when he quickly made it clear that he never wanted to leave Spain and it was down to the board.

The Argentine scored only three goals in 27 appearances in the Premier League and quickly became very unsettled in Manchester and his departure led to a lot of bitterness between himself and the fans.

After failing to join United’s pre-season tour in 2015, Di Maria joined Paris Saint-Germain for £44 million and was later pelted with bottles after scoring against the Red Devils in the Champions League three years ago.

6. Nicolas Pepe - Lille to Arsenal (£72m)

Nicolas Pepe became Arsenal’s club record signing when he joined in August 2019 but it didn’t take long before fans could see he wasn’t going to reach their expectations.

Despite offering a lot of speed and skill, the winger struggled to meet the demands of the Premier League and only scored one goal last season, resulting in him being sent to Nice on loan this summer.

5. Danny Drinkwater - Leicester to Chelsea (£35m)

Danny Drinkwater was among a number of players that gained plenty of interest following Leicester’s Premier League title triumph in 2016.

The midfielder earned himself a big money move to Chelsea but only managed 12 league appearances and quickly fell down the pecking order.

The 32-year-old has since had four loan spells with Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and Reading and has now been released by Chelsea five years after joining.

4. Fernando Torres - Liverpool to Chelsea (£50m)

Fernando Torres was widely considered one of the best strikers in the world during his time with Liverpool and there was great hope that he would continue that at Chelsea.

However, the Spaniard never quite reached the heights of his Merseyside days, scoring 45 goals in 172 appearances for the Blues.

Despite that, Torres did score a last-minute winner against Barcelona to send Chelsea through to the Champions League final - so some fans may say he was worth the money.

3. Jack Grealish - Aston Villa to Man City (£100m)

Jack Grealish became the most expensive English player ever when he joined Man City for a whopping £100m last summer.

The midfielder would have had to reach unbelievable levels to live up to that price tag in his first season, however it was far from that.

Grealish scored three goals and assisted another three in his first Premier League season at the club, however at 26 years old he still has plenty of time to improve.

2. Andy Carroll - Newcastle to Liverpool (£35m)

Andy Carroll’s move to Liverpool always seemed rather overpriced even before he had kicked a football for the Reds.

The striker had scored 13 Premier League goals for Newcastle the season before and now found himself becoming the most expensive British footballer at the time.

Bar a late winner against Everton in the FA Cup semi-final, Carroll’s time at Liverpool was hugely disappointing and he only managed 11 goals in 58 appearances before joining West Ham.

1. Paul Pogba - Juventus to Man United (£90m)

Paul Pogba’s £90m price tag seems 10 times more ridiculous just because they had offloaded him for free four years earlier.

After so much success at Juventus, fans were expecting big things of the midfielder who was still only 23 years old.

While Pogba had moments of excellence and was also named in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2018-19 season - he was very inconsistent and never reached the expectations placed on him when the club spent such a hefty fee on him.

It seemed like every summer he was linked with a move away until he finally returned to Juventus this summer - for free once again.
