Man Utd great set to land major role with Champions League club after 'learning his trade' under Erik ten Hag
The former Man Utd and Arsenal star is set to be given the biggest opportunity of his coaching career.
Former Manchester United forward Robin van Persie is reportedly in line to become the new manager of Feyenoord.
The 41-year-old is just one year into his managerial career with Eredivisie side Heerenveen and has emerged as the clear favourite to take over at his boyhood club. Feyenoord have been looking for a new head coach ever since they sacked Arne Slot's successor Brian Priske earlier this month, with Van Persie the leading candidate for the job.
It is understood the deal should be completed in the coming days and Feyenoord hope to unveil the former United and Arsenal striker early next week. Feyenoord are currently fourth in the Dutch top-flight but have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League after they knocked AC Milan out on aggregate in midweek.
Van Persie bookmarked his professional career with two spells at Feyenoord, where he came through the youth ranks before he was signed by Arsenal and returned to Rotterdam after time with United and Fenerbahce.
He learned his trade under Erik ten Hag
Van Persie gained valuable coaching experience back at former club United before taking the Heerenveen head coach role last summer. The Dutchman was invited back to Carrington by former manager Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff to get an insight into the daily expectations of managing a club and how to conduct training sessions.
The 41-year-old took up coaching after retiring in 2019 and also spent time with Feyenoord before he was handed his first managerial position last year. It has also been reported Van Persie could look to bring former United assistant coach Rene Hake to Feyenoord, who is still without a job since he was sacked by United in October last year.
Hake arrived at United from Go Ahead Eagles in July 2024, to work as an assistant under Ten Hag and 1908.nl claim he is open to continuing his career as an assistant, despite his previous experience as a head coach.
