Manchester United could face former manager on Boxing Day as club legend favourite to replace sacked boss

Man Utd face Wolves in the Premier League on Boxing Day and a reunion could be on the cards with their new manager.

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the early favourite to takeover at Wolverhampton Wanderers after they sacked manager Gary O'Neil.

The 41-year-old was dismissed on Sunday morning after Wolves lost to Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, a result that left them 19th in the league with just two wins from 16 matches so far this season.

United will be watching any developments at Molineux with intrigue ahead of their trip to face Wolves on Boxing Day, which could be any new appointment's first home match in charge of the club. There is even more to keep an eye on as well, with former United player and manager Solskjaer the early favourite to takeover at the Premier League club.

According to immediate betting odds published after O'Neil was sacked, Solskjaer is the favourite, with former Leicester manager Steve Cooper and former Porto manager Sérgio Conceição also in the frame. Another former United manager, David Moyes, is also lower down the odds.

It remains to be seen whether or not the links with Solskjaer are down to legitimate interest or whether or not they are simply because the Norwegian was in attendance to watch O'Neil's final match in charge over the weekend.

His presence at the match fuelled speculation of an upcoming managerial change, though it is understood he was actually in attendance to see his former United staff members, Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna and assistant manager Martyn Pert. It is also believed Solskjaer's son, Elijah, supports Ipswich.
