The 36-year-old has penned a contract extension keeping at the club until June 2025 after he played a key role in their success last season.

Evans was only expected to play a minimal role when he returned to his boyhood club last year, but ended up playing a key role with 30 appearances across all competitions, including an appearance in the FA Cup final victory over Man City.

There were some doubts about whether or not Evans would remain at the club after his contract technically expired almost two weeks ago, but United hierarchy have opted to keep him around for another year.

“I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season,” Evans said of his new deal. “To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.

“Returning to the club last season was an honour; representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic team-mates under an excellent manager. Winning the FA Cup together was an unforgettable experience; I know we can challenge for more trophies in the season ahead.”

Even after the deal for Evans, United will still look to sign at least two new central defenders this summer. They have already had a bid accepted for Lille defender Leny Yoro, have seen two rejected by Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite and are in talks with Bayern Munich over a move for Matthijs de Ligt.
