We are just a few days away from the return of the 2024/25 Premier League season, following the conclusion of the international break. Manchester United are gearing up to take on Brentford - but what is happening in the rumour mill in the meantime?
United have three Bayern Munich players in their sights and could make a move for two of them as early as the January transfer window. As things stand, they are merely monitoring the trio and have not submitted an official offer.

Hide AdAlphonso Davies is a ‘target’ for Manchester United in the summer window
United’s plight at left back has become well documented this season. Luke Shaw is struggling for match fitness, leaving Diogo Dalot to take his place - however, with Noussair Mazraoui now also ruled out, it makes their full back options even more sparse.
As such, United will look to ameliorate this issue, though they do not have a quick fix in mind. Instead, the Red Devils will turn their attention towards the summer transfer window, where they will make an effort to snap up Alphonso Davies on a free transfer if he cannot agree to a new contract with Bayern Munich. This is according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from journalist Florian Plettenberg, who wrote: “Alphonso Davies is one of Manchester United’s desired transfer targets for the upcoming summer. The Red Devils have already gathered information, but they don’t consider their chances to be very high.
“The 23-year-old left-back is in improving form. Currently, there are no new concrete talks with FC Bayern regarding a new contract, which expires at the end of the season. But Bayern is open to return to the negotiating table. As of now, he could leave Bayern on a free transfer. Real Madrid continues to be one of the top favourites, should he not extend his contract.”

Davies isn’t the only Bayern Munich player that United have been linked with recently - they are also thought to be in pursuit of both Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sane.
This, again, is according to Florian Plettenberg on X, who wrote: “Manchester United are monitoring the situations of Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané for a possible transfer in winter or summer.
“It is possible that MUFC will strengthen their squad in the winter with a central (defensive) midfielder. Goretzka, he’s an interesting candidate for Man Utd. However, Goretzka still wants to stay beyond winter at this stage. Contract until 2026 and Sané is continuing talks with Bayern about a contract beyond 2025.”
Like Davies, Sane’s current deal at Munich is due to expire in the summer. He has played in the Premier League before, where he won two Premier League titles with Manchester City.
Goretzka, however, is under contract with the Bavarian giants until the summer of 2026. Furthermore, he wants to see out the season with Bayern, which could make a move for him difficult.
