Manchester United appoint interim head coach after Ruben Amorim sacked
Man Utd have sacked Ruben Amorim from his role of head coach after he questioned the board.
Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as head coach after he criticised the lack of backing he has received in the role.
The Portuguese coach went to war with the United hierarchy over the weekend when he claimed he was not given the power to operate in his role as 'manager', despite the fact his official job title was that of 'head coach.' Amorim was tasked with leading training and producing positive results on the pitch, but believed he should have been given more freedom to rebuild the first-team squad into one that could play his specific style of football.
Amorim essentially challenged the United board to back him or sack him, a dangerous ultimatum from a head coach who only won 24 of his 63 games in charge. It is understood United U18s boss Darren Fletcher will take interim charge of the first-team squad and prepare them for their clash against Burnley in midweek.
Why Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim
Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as head coach after he criticised the club’s board for a lack of backing regarding both tactics and transfers. The 40-year-old felt he was not given the support to build a first-team squad in his own vision.
Manchester World have been told by club sources that the decision to sack Amorim was not down to any power struggle or ultimatium behind-the-scenes. Those close to the club claim the decision is down to the fact that they have not seen enough signs of evolution or progress this season.
United believe their squad is still more than capable of securing a top-six finish in the Premier League this season and that sacking Amorim gives them a better chance of achieving those ambitions.
A club statement released on Monday morning read: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
