Manchester United may yet be in the running to sign Inter Milan and Netherlands star Denzen Dumfries after weeks of rumours.

The Red Devils were said to be keen on Dumfries after his impressive displays at the World Cup, with Erik ten Hag already putting together a trend of bringing in fellow countrymen. Meanwhile, right-back was also a position Ten Hag and United were said to be keen to strengthen coming into this window, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka showing inconsistencies.

But there has been a shift on that side of the Red Devils back-line, with Wan-Bissaka proving some of his doubters wrong with impressive displays over recent weeks, and his timing couldn’t be better. United look unlikely to spend a significant fee during this window due to their potentially evolving ownership situation, and that has put likely first-choice right-back signing Dumfries out of reach.

That doesn’t mean United won’t re-enter the race in the summer, though, particularly if Wan-Bissaka does not keep up his current form, and it seems Dumfries’ agent is well aware there may still be an opportunity to be had. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Dutchman’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta , is currently in England shopping his client.

It’s claimed Pimenta has already held talks with United, as well as Chelsea and Newcastle United to try to drum up a market for the right-back ahead of the summer. Dumfries is still under a long-term contract, and he is likely to cost well over £30million, making a January deal very unlikely.

The summer may be different, though, and United’s situation may also change by that point, and it will be interesting to see whether Ten Hag is ruthless in pursuing the right-back, regardless of whether or not Wan-Bissaka does maintain his current run of form.
