Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is reportedly a surprise target for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The Scotland international has been at the centre of transfer speculation throughout the summer transfer window after being linked with the likes of West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United since the end of last season.

However, McTominay remains a United player for the time being and he has been named in Erik ten Hag’s matchday squad for the opening three games of the Premier League season. His on-field involvement amounts to just seven minutes after the 26-year-old came off the bench in the latter stages of wins against Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers and there have been some suggestions he could be handed a start in next weekend’s visit to Arsenal.

United legend Gary Neville discussed the midfielder’s situation at Old Trafford during commentary of last week’s defeat at Tottenham Hotspur and he revealed his belief Ten Hag is ‘managing’ McTominay out fo the club.

He said: "What's clear is that Manchester United's midfield needs bolstering. Ten Hag wants a number six who can play alongside Casemiro and, at the moment, the club can't get players out to be able to fund that.

"If they look at the first two weeks, they have to fund it or there will be a big problem. What is clear is that Ten Hag doesn't want to revert back to Scott McTominay. With Fernandes on the right, the midfield looks all over the place and the front three doesn't look capable of functioning as one. Does he go back to McTominay? Ten Hag has made five substitutions and not used him. It's almost as if he is managing him out of the club."

German outlet Bild have reported Bayern Munich are ‘thinking’ of making a unique loan offer to United that would see McTominay move to the Bundesliga champions on a season-long deal, with Dutch international Ryan Gravenberch joining the Red Devils in a similar move. Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel is said to be an admirer of the United midfielder and sees him as a candidate to play as a holding midfielder in his side.

Gravenberch has been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer but interest from Merseyside appears to have cooled following interest earlier this window.
