Manchester United have released their new home kit ahead of the 2022/23 season and fans are divided over its design.

The predominantly red shirt features a white collar and is the first United kit to have one since 2015, while the three Adidas stripes on each shoulder and sleeve are black.

It also dons a shield around the club’s crest, while the Adidas logo, sleeve sponsorship (DXC Technology) and front of shirt sponsorship (TeamViewer) are in white.

The finer details of the shirt include a subtle pinstripe design in a lighter red to the base of the kit, as well as red and black triangle design on the collar.

United will wear the kit for the first time on July 12 when they take on rivals Liverpool in a pre-season friendly in Bangkok - Erik ten Hag’s first game in charge of the club.

Inigo Turner, Adidas’ Design Director, believes the Red Devils’ new kit has a ‘strong visual identity’ that ‘runs through the DNA of the club’.

“The polo collar is synonymous with Manchester United,” she said via United’s official website.

“Turned up or folded down, it has played a starring role in many of the club’s biggest moments.

“With such a rich history, we wanted to pay homage to some of the club’s most legendary kits and players, whilst capturing the essence of home brought into the present day with a new perspective on the strong visual identity and patterns that run through the DNA of the club.”

Despite the new features, the kit has received mixed reviews amongst the Red Devils fan base, with one fan calling it ‘the worst kit they’ve ever seen’, while others have stated they will be ‘definitely buying this one’.

@Shawniffe tweeted: “Love the kit.The collars, the retro feel is everything. I strongly believe this is the kit we start winning trophies in again!”.

@jakschudlem added: “Nice and old school. Reminds me late 90s.”

However, @MKennedy1 disagrees strongly, saying: “It’s absolutely awful. It’s so busy. Collar design is bizarre, black shoulder stripes clash with all the other elements which are white and the badge sitting within that weird holding device is terrible. Feels like Homer Simpson designed it. It’s my least favourite United jersey.”
