The chances of Victor Osimhen completing a transfer to Manchester United look ‘extremely unlikely’, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils have long been linked with the Napoli forward as Erik ten Hag looked to bolster his attack.

Cristiano Ronaldo was expected to leave Old Trafford in the off-season, while Edinson Cavani was released and Mason Greenwood remains suspended. Despite Anthony Martial’s reintegration into the team, Romano claims that they are still keen to add a centre-forward in the new year.

Writing in his BetVictor blog, Romano said: “The [signing of] a new striker will be one of the top targets for Manchester United in 2023. It was a priority for summer 2022 but Ten Hag wanted to invest big money on Antony and this is why the plan changed, so Manchester United will consider the opportunities in 2023.”

Osimhen could still be a target for the Red Devils after he failed to secure a move away from Napoli, though Romano has played down rumours of the Nigerian arriving in the Premier League.

The Italian journalist wrote: “Rumours of Victor Osimhen are not confirmed as Napoli have no intention to sell him, unless they receive an official bid of more than €100m so it looks extremely unlikely. It’s still an open situation for Man United [regarding signing a striker], it [the club] will take time before deciding on the next big investment.”

Osimhen joined Napoli from Lille in 2020 and has gone on to impress, scoring 24 goals in 51 appearances since his arrival. The 23-year-old has continued his form into this season as the club sit top of Serie A.
