Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a new contract deal for goalkeeper David de Gea. The Spaniard is due to become a free agent at the end of the month and his future at the club has been up in the air.

As detailed in a report by the Daily Mail, the 32-year-old is on the ‘verge’ of putting pen-to-paper on an extenstion and has ‘agreed terms’. However, his number one spot may not be guaranteed next season.

United were beaten in the FA Cup final by rivals Manchester City at the weekend and their ‘keeper came under scrunity once again as they lost 2-1 at Wembley. The second goal scored by Ilkay Gundogan bobbled in off the post and the strike didn’t appear to have too much venom on it but it was let in.

Pundit Roy Keane wasn’t impressed and said afterwards: “I’d move him on quickly, he’s not for me, he’s not going to get Man United back winning trophies, absolutely not. This idea of everybody patting him on the head, it’s just ridiculous. That’s his job.”

De Gea moved to England back in 2011 after catching the eye in La Liga with Atletico Madrid. It took him a while to adapt to life in a new country initially but he has since gone on to make 545 appearances in all competitions.

The Red Devils have won both the title and FA Cup once, the Carabao Cup twice and the Europa League with the Spain international between the sticks. However, they have also seen rivals City make big strides ahead of them both on and off the pitch which has made many, including former midfield favourite Keane, question whether they need a change in goal.

United have the chance to bolster their squad this summer as they look ahead to next term. Champions League football is also back in the next campaign.
