Erik ten Hag provided an injury update on Manchester United midfielders Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Neither player was involved as the Red Devils won 2–0 over Wolves on Saturday, with Anthony Martial and Alejandro Garnacho netting as United grabbed an important three points in the race for the top four.

Sabitzer’s absence was a surprise when the teams were named ahead of the game, with no mention of a knock in the build-up. However, Ten Hag revealed in his pre-match interview with MUTV that the on-loan Bayern Munich man missed out with an injury but didn’t elaborate on the extent of the problem.

Scott McTominay has missed the last nine in all competitions due to an injury but Ten Hag revealed on Friday that the Scotland international is closing in on a return. "He’s made really good steps," the United boss told the club’s website. "He’s close, but not close enough to make the selection for [Wolves]."

It meant United had just four fit midfielders for the Wolves game, with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes starting in midfield, while Fred was on the bench. However, it’s hoped Sabitzer and McTominay could be back in action for next Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth.

The win over Wolves saw United move four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool and draw level on points with Newcastle United in third. All three sides have now played the same number of games with Liverpool in action next when they travel to Leicester City on Monday night.
