Erik ten Hag has given a worrying injury update on Manchester United duo Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane after the 2-2 draw against Sevilla on Thursday.

The Red Devils endured a frustrating night as they conceded two late goals to allow Sevilla back into the Europa League quarter-final tie. That disappointment was only compounded by double injuries suffered to United’s centre-back in the first leg.

Martinez was replaced in the 86th minute with what appeared to be a foot injury and the Argentina international had to be carried down the tunnel on a stretcher. Meanwhile, Varane went down on a few occasions in the first half and had to be replaced at half-time by Harry Maguire.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag gave a fitness update on the duo and also explained the unusual reason he decided to replace Bruno Fernandes and Antony just after an hour. “I had to make them [substitutions], there was no other way,” he said.

“Rapha was injured, I had to make [it]. Anthony Martial, first start after a long period so we had to make it on the 60. Then Bruno, I got the warnings from the refs he was short before his second booking and the same for Antony, so I had to make the subs, I had no choice.

“We get the injury to Licha [Martinez] - not a good look,” he added. “But both goals are really unlucky, two deflected. What can you do? Sometimes you have bad days and bad luck. Tonight was not our night.”

Asked whether Martinez’s injury is an achilles problem, Ten Hag replied: “No it is not the area. I can’t tell but it is not the area of achilles. I think he will not play on Sunday [against Nottingham Forest], it looks like that.

“But I can’t say what is the diagnosis and I prefer to wait, then we are clear and know exactly what is it. I have an idea what we can play on Sunday but first we have to see tomorrow and talk with the medical [team], see who came out of the game and then we have a plan and then we will bring a good team on pitch.”

Ten Hag was also asked whether he expects to be without both Martinez and Varane at the weekend. “It could be, yeah,” he said. “We have very good replacements with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, so we have players who can replace them but of course it is a miss.”

The mention of Shaw is a boost for United, with the defender missing the last two matches with a knock, while Ten Hag also gave an encouraging update on Marcus Rashford’s chances of playing asking Sevilla in the second leg next week. “There is a chance but I can’t confirm it in this moment,” he said.

Rashford came off in the weekend win over Everton with what appeared to be a groin injury, while Alejandro Garnacho and Donny van de Beek are also missing through injury.
