Manchester United are now just a matter of hours away from their return to Premier League action.

The Red Devils have already returned to competitive action after seeing off Burnley in the Carabao Cup during the week, and they now turn attention to league matters, facing Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Erik ten Hag’s men need to make up ground on the top four, and this is a game they will be expecting to win, though these are the sort of games that have proved tricky for United so far this term.

As preparations for the clash continue, we have rounded up all the latest transfer news and rumours surrounding Old Trafford.

Gakpo update

United have been sent a fresh update over PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo, who is a reported target ahead of the January transfer window.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has tweeted: “Cody Gakpo hasn’t changed his mind on Manchester United. He was keen on joining last summer and this is still the case, discussions with his agents have always been positive. It’s on Man United now, time to decide internally about €55m-€60m (£48m- £53m) investment.”

United held talks with Gakpo in January, but the transfer did not materialise.

Felix claims

United are said to be closing in on a deal to sign Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix.

According to Le10 Sport, the Red Devils are turning to Felix to replace Cristiano Ronaldo in their attack, and a deal is close to being struck ahead of the January window. Felix is available this winter after falling out with Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, though, the Madrid club are not going to reclaim the more than £100million they spend on the Portuguese.

Felix would be much-needed weapon in the United frontline, but he is a very different player from Ronaldo, more likely to play wide rather than centrally.
