Manchester United return to Premier League action this week when they host Nottingham Forest, over six weeks on from the Red Devils’ last league encounter.

Erik ten Hag’s men won 2-1 on that occasion against Fulham, meaning they ended the pre-World Cup period of the season in fifth place, three points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur who have played a game more.

Breaking into the Champions League spots is something United will aim to achieve in the coming weeks of the campaign, and they face a relatively kind return to league action with fixtures against Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth making up the club’s first three matches after the World Cup.

As for Forest, they currently sit 18th in the table but won their last two prior to the pause in the campaign. Steve Cooper’s side also have been beaten just once in the last five league matches.

The fixture at Old Trafford will see Jesse Lingard return to his boyhood club following his departure last summer. The 29-year-old played 232 times for the Red Devils and scored 35 goals. Current United goalkeeper Dean Henderson also won’t be eligible to play against his parent club, meaning Wayne Hennessey should replace him in the team.

The upcoming encounter will be the first time the two clubs have faced each other since February 1999, a game in which United memorably won 8-1 en route to claiming the treble. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four at the City Ground that night despite coming off the bench in the 71st minute.
