Hide AdThe Red Devils came up short over the summer despite spending weeks trying to sign the Barcelona midfielder.
But we could yet see a situation where de Jong becomes available, or at least if this summer is anything to go by.
According to Cadena SER’s Adria Soldevila, Barca president Joan Laporta has promised de Jong he will adjust his salary by the end of the season.
The two clashed this summer over financial issues, and that almost led to de Jong leaving Barcelona, so United could get their chance if Laporta does not live up to that promise in a timely manner.

Hide AdUnited are said to be interested in a move for Napoli defender Kim Min-jae.
According to CNN Turkey, Min-Jae has caught United’s eye after a superb start to the season in Naples.
Though, the centre-back has only been with Napoli since the summer, joining to replace Chelsea-bound Kalidou Koulibaly.
According to Gianluca di Marzio, Min-Jae can only be signed if his release clause is activated.
Min-jae’s release clause is set at £43million, and it can only be activated from January.
