Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has taken a swipe at former club Norwich City on social media, with a post mocking the Canaries’ league position.

The 23-year-old is on loan at Norwich’s local rivals Ipswich Town and uploaded a picture of himself shielding his eyes from the sun, accompanied with the caption ‘me trying to see Norwich in the top half of the table’. The post was quickly deleted from his Instagram page on Monday.

Williams joined Ipswich at the end of August in a short-term deal and has played every match since his switch to Suffolk. Under the stewardship of former United coach Kieran McKenna, the Tractor Boys are currently sitting second in the Championship table and are nine points clear of third-place Leeds United, with a game in hand.

As for Norwich, David Wagner’s side are 17th after 14 games and have lost the last three matches. Williams spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Carrow Road and made 29 appearances as the club were relegated from the Premier League.

The full-back’s contract at United expires next summer and he is not expected to sign a new deal with the club, meaning he could be available for a free transfer at the end of the season. Ipswich may prove to be an appealing option for Williams, especially if they can maintain their impressive form and gain promotion to the Premier League, just a year after finishing second in League One. The club haven’t played in the top flight since their relegation in 2002.

The defender, who can operate on the right or left flanks, has scored twice in 10 appearances for Ipswich this season, and has played every minute in their current four-match winning streak. He has also made 51 appearances for the Red Devils and has netted once.
