Manchester United have confirmed that centre back Aoife Mannion has agreed a contract extension with the club.

The Republic of Ireland international first linked up with Marc Skinner's side in the summer of 2021 when she moved from neighbours Manchester City and has made a total of 28 appearances since joining.

“I'm so delighted to be staying here at United. It was an easy choice for me and I'm really pleased to continue this journey and see where we can go over the next few seasons" said the defender on confirmation of her new deal.

Head coach Skinner was equally as delighted to confirm the new deal, adding: “Aoife is a key part of our squad on and off the field, and consistently displays the values and leadership qualities required to play for Manchester United. We are delighted that Aoife will continue her career with us, and this new contract is a testament to her hard work and commitment to the red shirt.”

Mannion, 27, returned from a long term ACL injury that season and put in a player of the match display in the crucial top of the table win over Arsenal at Leigh Sports Village and has become an increasingly popular figure within the United fanbase.

The Red Devils saw their Women's Super League fixtures confirmed yesterday morning and were handed a tough opening game away to Aston Villa before former favourite Alessia Russo and her Arsenal side arrive at Leigh Sports Village the following weekend.

While the length of contract has not been disclosed, it is understood Mannion and the club had an option for an extra year on her previous deal. However, the club's official website have confirmed that it is a "new" deal the defender has agreed.
