Manchester United have confirmed Norway international defender Maria Thorisdottir will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a “long term” injury in their FA Cup tie with Lewes.

Described as a “mid-foot” injury, fans had feared the worst when she was taken off in the 3-1 quarter final win and the cup have now confirmed the 29-year-old will not feature until next season.

A post on the club’s official website read: “Maria Thorisdottir has sustained a long-term mid-foot injury. It will unfortunately rule her out for the remainder of the 2022/23 season. Maria will be working with our medical team on her rehabilitation, and we look forward to seeing her back in red again very soon”.

The news will come as a bitter blow to Marc Skinner and his team as they battle to lift major silverware for the first time and compete for both the Women’s Super League title and the Women’s FA Cup in the closing months of the campaign.

On the injury, Thorisdottir said: “I’ve been knocked down many times before, and I will again bounce back even stronger and better than ever. Tough times don’t last, but tough people do. See you next season, Reds.”

United, who defeated West Ham United 4-0 in front of almost 28,000 fans at Old Trafford on Saturday, will face back to back games with managerless Brighton as they clash in the league this weekend before they meet again in the FA Cup semi-final.
