Manchester United have announced Mason Mount is back running on the grass once again as he steps up his recovery from injury.

The midfielder has missed the last nine games in all competitions through injury and last played for the Red Devils on 11 November.

Erik ten Hag said last week that the ex-Chelsea man will not be available until January, but his return to full training is a boost ahead of the new year. Mount was pictured running at Carrington, along with those who did not start the Boxing Day win over Aston Villa.

A second-half brace from Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund’s maiden Premier League goal secured all three points for United after they trailed 2-0 at half-time against Unai Emery’s side. Ten Hag started with Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes in the middle, with Scott McTominay on the bench along with Donny van de Beek.

Fellow midfielders Sofyan Amrabat and Casemiro also missed out due to injury, with the latter expected back in January, like Mount. Amrabat missed the game with a minor knock and could be back to face Forest.

While Mount is not expected to be back for that game, his return to training will be a boost for Ten Hag, who has lacked midfield options at various times this season.

The ex-Chelsea star joined United in the summer for an initial fee of £55m and has played 12 games, but is yet to register a goal or assist for the club. His poor form, following on from his displays at the end of his Chelsea career, have seen the 24-year-old drop out of the England squad.
