Manchester United have been told how much they’ll need to pay in order to sign PSV Eindhoven striker Cody Gakpo.

The Netherlands international has been strongly linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with Erik ten Hag recently admitting he is keen to add a striker to his ranks following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. Gakpo, who impressed at the World Cup and scored three goals, is seen as one of the world’s top young forwards and is believed to be attracting interest from across the globe.

But PSV’s director of football Marcel Brands has warned prospective buyers that it will take a significant fee to prise Gakpo from the Dutch club. "You have to be realistic,” he told supporters’ talk show, Eeuwig Trouw.

“When you talk about Cody Gakpo and the price tag, how many clubs are able to buy a player of that calibre? You are talking about maybe 10 or 12 clubs in Europe.

"You have to need a player in that position and be able and willing to spend the money in January, which is normally less hectic than the summer. We have yet to see if it all happens.

“He has no clause or anything and no amounts have been agreed on either. The agreements that were made were there before my time.

“Amounts have not been discussed, but if the right club comes that Cody would like to go… It must be a record transfer for PSV anyway. Then you know in which direction it should go,” he added.

PSV’s current record transfer fee was the £36m they received for Hirving Lozano in 2019 when the winger signed for Napoli. Therefore, by Brands’ logic, it will likely take a fee of over £40m to bring Gakpo to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier this week that the 23-year-old’s price tag may be closer to £50m.

“PSV want €50m (£43m), but the fee could be between €60m-€70m (£52m-£60m),” he explained to fan channel The United Stand. The Italian journalist claimed Gakpo would be interested in a move to the Red Devils and also gave an update on reports linking him with Liverpool and Real Madrid.

“There is competition but, honestly, all the rumours I saw, like Liverpool in talks for Gakpo,” said Romano. “From what I’m told, there are no talks between Liverpool and Gakpo; same with Real Madrid, they are following the player because it is normal for clubs to follow these kinds of top talents.

“But there are no bids; no club has made a bid to PSV Eindhoven. Man United know they have a good opportunity to sign the player.”
