Manchester United look to have been ‘rejected’ by one of their reported defensive targets.

The Red Devils have been busy in the transfer window this summer, spending around £200million to bring in Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund. Whether they will add to that haul may well depend on exits, but is has been reported they will try to sign another midfielder, while the defence could do with more depth should they be able to shift some of the fringe players.

One player who has been heavily linked recently is Bayern Munich star Benjamin Pavard, who looks set to depart Bavaria this summer.

Though, according to reports in Italy, Inter Milan look the most likely to pull off a deal for the centre-back, and that’s despite reports claiming a deal had collapsed between Inter and Bayern.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pavard has rejected an offer from United to join Inter, who are said to be confident of announcing a deal ‘shortly’. The Champions League finalists have strengthened significantly this summer, and they now look close to beating United to Pavard, who will likely get more guarantees of starts at San Siro.

Though, the deal is not done yet, with Bayern reportedly keen to sort a replacement ahead of selling Pavard. That’s despite the Frenchman not being a starter at the Allianz Arena as things stand. He was left on the bench for Bayern’s 4-0 away win over Werder Bremen over the weekend, a game that saw former United target Harry Kane net his first goal for his new club.

Last week Harry Maguire’s proposed move to West Ham fell through as the defender rejected a move to London. Manager Erik ten Hag said of the situation: “Harry is a player for us, and I’m happy he is here. We need a good squad and we have four good centre-halves. Including Luke Shaw, we have five and we need it because we are going to play 50 to 60 games this season.”
