Man Utd ace 'could miss rest of the season' in huge blow to Erik ten Hag's side

Manchester United could be without a natural left-back between now and May.

Manchester United could reportedly be without Luke Shaw for the remainder of the season after the left-back suffered a recurrence of an ongoing leg injury against Luton last weekend.

Shaw was a major doubt for the trip to Kenilworth Road on Sunday afternoon, having been forced off at half-time during the 2-1 win at Aston Villa earlier this month. The 28-year-old passed a late fitness test with Erik ten Hag adamant he was fit to start, but lasted less than 45 minutes before trudging off again.

Fitness issues have plagued Shaw's campaign thus far and The Daily Mail now reports that Shaw is 'likely' to miss the rest of this season due to the ongoing issue. He could be absent for United's final 13 Premier League games as well as the rest of their FA Cup campaign.

Shaw has only started 15 games for United this season due to multiple injury woes. The left-back missed more than three months after picking up a thigh issue in August before missing a further month around the festive period.

The news comes as a major blow to manager Erik ten Hag, who will not have a natural left-back available for a massive final few months of the season. United's good run of form has seen them earn an outside chance of making the top-four, while there is still silverware to play for in the FA Cup.

Tyrell Malacia is yet to feature this season after undergoing knee surgery last summer and there is no indication the Dutchman will be back any time soon. United sent Brandon Williams on loan to Ipswich Town last year and Alvaro Fernandez is currently at Portuguese side Benfica. It is not believed either has a recall clause in their respective contracts.

Sergio Reguilon was signed on loan from Tottenham but barely featured beyond the first few weeks of his move and sent back in January. He has since joined Premier League rivals Brentford for the remainder of the season.

Ten Hag has opted to play Diogo Dalot at left-back on occasion but has been clear about his desire to have players on their natural side. Having lost left-footed centre-back Lisandro Martinez earlier this month, doing so will be impossible.

Dalot is also the only fit right-back currently, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka injured. The Portuguese international has been excellent in recent weeks and would ideally want to stay on the side he has found form in. He is now one of only five fit senior defenders in the squad alongside Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.
