Manchester United are hoping Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho are back in time for Sunday’s trip to Anfield.

The Red Devils head into the game following huge recent cup wins against Barcelona, Newcastle United and West Ham United, with four of their last five matches coming in cup competitions. However, the focus is very much on the Premier League this weekend with one of the club’s biggest games of the season.

The absence of Shaw for such an enormous clash would be a real setback for Erik ten Hag, with the full-back enjoying a superb run of form over the last few weeks. He missed Wednesday’s win over West Ham with a minor knock, while Sancho didn’t feature due to illness, but is unlikely to start against Liverpool even if fit.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag said both players should be back in time for Sunday. “I think we’ll have players back. I’m not sure if you’ve seen but yesterday [Wednesday] Luke Shaw was not available. We expect him back,” revealed the former Ajax boss.

“Sancho was ill. We’ll have to wait for how that develops but yeah, I think [he will be back] as well.”

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial remains absent with a hip injury, but he has returned to training and might play before the international break at the end of March. Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek remain on the sidelines with long-term problems.

As for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday that Joe Gomez, Thiago and Luis Diaz are out. “The last message I got, it’s now early [and] I didn’t see them this morning - a lot of things can happen overnight - but yesterday evening they were all fine apart from the players who are out; Thiago and Luis Diaz. Joe, obviously, I think is closer, but not close enough,” said the German.

Arthur Melo is closing in on a return to the team but won’t be available this weekend, nor will Kalvin Ramsay who is set to miss the rest of the season after recently undergoing knee surgery. The only doubt for Liverpool is Naby Keita. The midfielder missed the midweek win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and is to be assessed before this weekend.

Doubt: Keita (Liverpool)

Ruled out: Ramsay, Gomez, Melo, Thiago, Diaz (Liverpool); Eriksen, Van de Beek, Martial (United)
