Liverpool confirm injury blow with star expected to miss Manchester United fixture later this month

Man Utd will travel to face Liverpool FC in their first match back after the October international break.

Liverpool have been handed an early injury blow ahead of their home match with Manchester United later this month. Ruben Amorim's side will travel to Anfield in their first game back after the upcoming international break for the clash on Sunday 19 October.

The Portuguese head coach is expected to take charge of the match regardless of what happens when United host Sunderland in the Premier League this weekend, with co-owner Jim Ratcliffe eager to give Amorim a full season to show what he can do.

United face a daunting run of matches when they return to action in two weeks, with the trip to face Liverpool followed by a home match against Brighton and visits to Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur. United's trip to Anfield could be the toughest of the lot, although the home side is expected to be without a key player for the clash, which could give them a slight bit of hope.

Liverpool star expected to miss United clash

Liverpool are back in action when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, with Arne Slot eager to see an improvement from their consecutive away defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray.

Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa will both undergo late fitness tests to be involved in the match this weekend, though young centre-back Giovanni Leoni has been ruled out for the rest of the season after he ruptured his ACL.

There is also bad news regarding goalkeeper Alisson, who suffered a hamstring issue in the midweek defeat to Galatasaray and is not expected to feature against Chelsea or United. The 33-year-old has not been included in Brazil’s squad for the upcoming friendlies against South Korea and Japan.

It means Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to make his Premier League debut against Chelsea and could keep his place in goal when United travel to Anfield after the international break.

“Alisson is not part of the squad tomorrow and is not going to travel to Brazil," Slot confirmed at his pre-match press conference. "He will be out for Saturday. Depends on how fast the recovery goes. Clear he’s not going to be here on Saturday and for Brazil and I’d be surprised if he plays in the first game after the international break.”
